On February 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked southeast Turkey near the Syrian
border, with thousands of aftershocks rumbling across the region, according to the
United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This was
the most powerful earthquake to strike the area in more than 20 years. On February
20, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Hatay, a southern Turkish province near the
Syrian border, causing more damage and killing three people. The combined death toll
has surpassed 53,000 with more than 850,000 children displaced in Turkey and Syria.
Currently, over 1.9 million people are seeking shelter in tents and temporary shelters
in Turkey and 500,000 in Syria are homeless.
